Ten Years Later

In November of 2021, I reached the 10th anniversary of my cancer surgery. Most cancers are considered “cured” after five years, but prostate cancer is slow growing and so is only considered cured after ten years. I have now reached that anniversary. This is determined by semi-annual PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests. Since only the prostate creates this antigen, its presence in the blood is an indication of the presence of of prostate tissue (either from the organ itself, or from metastasized prostate-cancer cells. Since my prostate has been removed, any detectable amount of PSA would be a sign of lurking cancer; luckily no PSA has ever been detected since the date of the surgery.
