At some point Apple came out with the Newton, a hand-held computer with a touch-sensitive screen that was manipulated with a pen-like stylus. It was too large to fit in the pocket and had a hand-writing system that was the butt of many jokes and even cartoons. I bought one and used it, but it was cumbersome.
Then Pilot came out with the Palm Pilot. It was smaller and had a simplified handwriting-recognition system. I still use a pilot today. My current model fits in my shirt pocket and holds 4 MB of memory.
